About the speaker:

Minister Katsunobu Kato is Minister of Health, Labour, and Welfare; Minister for Working-style Reform; Minister in charge of the Abduction Issue; and Minister of State for the Abduction Issue in Japan. He has held numerous cabinet positions throughout his notable career in the Japanese government. In October 2009 he was appointed Director of the Health, Labour and Welfare Division of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, and in 2012 became Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary. In October 2015 Minister Kato became Minister for Promoting Dynamic Engagement of All Citizens, Minister in charge of Women’s Empowerment, and Minister in charge of the Abduction Issue. In August 2016 he also became Minister for Working-style Reform. Minister Kato has been elected six times as the member of the House of Representatives since 2003. He joined the Ministry of Finance in 1979 and transitioned to politics after 16 years. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo.
